The Process

Your journey to train to become a driving instructor begins here. The process consists of three key stages: ADI Part 1, ADI Part 2 and ADI Part 3. There is a test at the end of each stage, which is conducted by the DSA. Our training and support is designed to ensure your success in these tests and throughout your career as a driving instructor.

Train to become a driving instructor in three stages - ADI Part 1, 2 and 3

Find out how to become a driving instructor

RED’s driver training programme has helped thousands of students successfully complete all three stages. Our training can fit around your current commitments allowing you the flexibility to book your test when you feel ready, giving you the best possible chance of being part of our industry leading pass rates.

However, we are here to help at any point during your study, and the sooner you start our driving instructor training, the quicker you’ll be on the road as your own boss!

The three RED ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) stages are as follows:

ADI Part 1

This is an advanced online training programme that will help you to work through all the relevant material at your own pace. We will monitor your progress, ascertain and build on strengths, as well as improve any areas you feel require additional mentoring.

Tutor support is also available to all students throughout the process and in our experience you’ll feel reassured knowing help is only a phone call away if you should ever need it. We are dedicated to each and every one of our students; you will receive a friendly phone call shortly after your enrolment to book your Part 2 training sessions. We know you’ll be eager to take the next step!

ADI Part 2

With the theory knowledge under your belt, you will be keen to put it into practice during your part 2, in-car training sessions.

Part 2 focuses on your driving ability. Our team of expert trainers will guide you through a series of practical learning sessions designed to ensure you meet and exceed the standard set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Towards the end of your Part 2 training sessions we will contact you to arrange your Part 3 training programme.

ADI Part 3

You’re now within touching distance of being a recognised RED driving instructor. This stage involves both theory and practical work, which will help develop your overall teaching ability. You will undergo a series of coaching sessions with our trainers, ranging from realistic role play to road safety awareness, to fine tune your knowledge and understanding.

Following your part 2 training, we will provide you with the necessary part 3 training to entitle you to apply to the DSA for a pink badge, giving you the opportunity to teach for reward on a trainee licence and refine your teaching skills. At this stage you will be classified a Potential Driving Instructor and can then join RED Driving School.

Whether you choose to apply for a trainee licence or continue straight through to your part 3 test is up to you. Our training officers – all ADIs themselves – can help you decide the option that suits you best.

Passing your part 3 test propels you to ADI status – a fully Approved Driving Instructor! All your hard work and commitment has paid off and you can be proud of this life changing achievement. You are now part of a respected and well-known group of driving instructors who’ve successfully trained with RED – this is the moment we encourage you to celebrate!

All of our students undergo a CRB check by Government Agency, Capita, and once approved, can join the DSA’s register of ADIs. It’s worth noting that you can commence your training before we receive your CRB check back, if you are confident of being approved*. If for any reason you are refused on to the register, it is likely we will provide a refund and cancel the course if you have not progressed beyond part 1.

Our training can generally be completed within six to nine months, but external factors, such as the CRB check and DSA test date availability, can affect this timeframe.
